what i've been up to lately
been busy at work lately. organising meetings and getting quotes and covering duties of those who were on leave and those going on leave. it's interesting because i get to learn new things all the time. :)
was on leave on thursday for Jeremy's meet-the-teacher session. the kids are rowdy but they are adorable. it was a leisurely thursday for me. reminds me of when i am not working. planning my own timetable and doing things i want to do at my own time. good for the soul. went to return Pamela's graduation gown after that and then it's to ICA to do the replacement of my IC. they have this exhibition on the ground floor just next to the canteen. thought i'll go in for a quick look-see as it didn't seem like something i would be interested in but i think i spent almost 40 mins in there. watched a videotape on the different ways of verifying identification, looked at the displays of some interesting cases they cracked and the earlier forms of identity papers. it was an eye-opener for me. after that nice walk round the small exhibition hall, it's back home to food at the coffeeshop. wanted to take chicken rice at ICA because i was really hungry but it costs $3 for a not-so-appetising plate. decided to wait a little longer by taking the train home. the food at our coffeeshop seems more interesting and cheaper. i can get a nice meal for as little as $2...exclude drink of course.
anyway, the day ended with Spiderman3 at Golden Village Tiong Bahru. it was Jeremy's treat for his birthday and yes, we had a family meal at Seoul Garden Bugis on Tuesday. we ate till our tummies wanted to burst. it has been something he has always wanted...a nice happy family meal with everyone there. it hardly happens with everyone doing their own things. what i'm proud of? Jeremy wanted this to happen, he took action and initiated everything. Well done boy! Proud of you.
i've to pack the house but don't know where to start. how???
final update for now, i've started a new blog on teaching handicrafts -
www.star-guidance.blogspot.com - going to start with knitting first and then move on to crochet and jewelry making. want to make this work and to make this work, there is so much to learn about the internet and this is something i'm nuts about! tough and interesting journey ahead.....
need to get the digital cam working again...faster otherwise cannot learn how to take nice pictures.

teamwork when you least expect it
went for a dragon boat event as a parent volunteer with my son's school. i am sure all the kids enjoyed themselves as all came back tired bu excited. they were all wet and aching from all the rowing but was all smiles.
what struck me with warmth was watching the students from Sec 1I helping each other to get back to shore. 2 boats came back last...after most of the students have started to go and change to dry clothes. no one from the association was helping or guiding them on how to walk past all the boats to get on the floating platform and there was no one to help them get from the platform to the stairs i.e. n one was there to help pull the platform nearer to the stairs! what if one of them were to jump across and fall into the water??? what is all this talk about safety and no action on it? was it beacause there was another group of corporate customers to please or because they are just kids...not important? everything started off well but if the finish is lousy, everything fails.
anyway, kudos to the Sec 1I boys. though they bicker and argue and talk like they really hate each other, i know they will be there for everyone when a crisis happens.

they boys holding on to the boats for others to cross safely. they were all tired and with aching arms but there they were holding on and encouraging all to keep moving. some fell as it was slippery and wet but words of encouragement were everywhere.

....and they didn't budge till all were off the boats. see that guy in black? all he did was shouting at the kids to move faster. does he know the fear they have? this is the first time for most of them. the boats were moving, the floor slippery and the water prob scary for some. there he was shouting at them and shaking his head like they were a bunch of useless bums. i was looking at him and wondering where his passion is...in watersports or in teaching what he loves.
